Banned Books Week is an annual event celebrating the freedom to read. First observed in 1982, Banned Books Week highlights banned and challenged books while encouraging patrons to exercise their right to read without censorship. This year, Banned Books Week is September 22 – September 28, 2019 and this year’s theme is “Censorship Leaves Us in the Dark. Keep the Light On.”
Celebrate Banned Books Week at the Ascension Parish Library in Gonzales on Tuesday, September 24, at 6:00 PM by watching The Glass Castle. The Glass Castle is a movie based on the bestselling memoir by Jeannette Walls, one of the most frequently challenged books by many schools and some libraries. The film, starring Brie Larson, Woody Harrelson, and Naomi Watts, chronicles the adventures of an eccentric, resilient and tight-knit family. It depicts a young woman who, influenced by the joyfully wild nature of her deeply dysfunctional father, found the fiery determination to carve out a successful life on her own terms.
The Glass Castle is rated PG-13. Some material may not be suitable for children under age 13. For more information or to register for this event, call 647-3955. For more information on Banned Books Week, visit www.ala.org/advocacy/bbooks/banned.
